Wine Tasting

Winery In Focus: Villa Di Calabro

A few days ago while walking around Old Town Temecula we decided to walk into Villa di Calabro to try some wines. It had been at least 3 years since our last visit and we were anxious to see what amazing wines they had to offer. The tasting room is located in the center of town, just west of city hall in a beautiful quaint 1927 historical house with a large oak tree out front.

Opening the door we walk inside and feel like we have stepped into a little wine shop somewhere in Tuscany. The décor gives off a warm and cozy feeling enticing whoever walks in to stay awhile. Moments later we are greeted with a smile by the owner, Mike Calabro who beacons us to the bar. Graciously we sit down and Mike takes us through the menu.

There were a total of 5 wines available and Mike started us at the top of the list. The Chardonnay was crisp and clean with hints of citrus, pineapple, and pear. It had a smooth finish that would pair easily with a light chicken salad or fish. The next wine was my favorite of the whites. The ‘Villa White’ is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. It had a sweet aroma on the nose with soft tropical fruity notes of guava and pineapple on the finish. This wine would pair well with cheeses or spicy foods but for me it’s a sit out on the porch and gaze at the stars kind of wine. Yummy!!! The Sangria was next and it was made with the Villa White wine, peaches, and spices. It was just a bit sweeter than the Villa White but easy to drink on a hot summer day. The Merlot was the only red on the menu at this time but it was a nice well rounded medium bodied wine. It was a little herbaceous on the nose with hints of black cherry, plum, and chocolate on the finish. This would pair nicely with Gouda, a Rib eye, or just drinking it by itself. The last wine we tried was their Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Port. We are big port people and this was definitely different from other ports we have had in the past. This has to be our first Cabernet Port so we were extra excited to try it. We both were hooked on the nose and sold on our first sip. Breathing it in several times before even tasting it I could smell the dark chocolate and just didn’t want that to go away. Then I closed my eyes and took a long sip and swirled it in my mouth to taint my palate. Wow, the lingering silky finish of chocolate, smoke, and a hint of spice was the perfect way to end the tasting.

Needless to say, we walked out with a delicious bottle of port wine. If you’re looking for something new stop in and check out Calabro Winery in Old Town Temecula. Besides great wine they make and sell olive oil which you can taste there as well. Thanks Mike Calabro for the friendly service and sharing your amazing product with us.
